Art Direction, Photography: Wash Day
For this assignment, I was given a six photo essay to convey the them of identity while telling a story. With the six photos, I had to determine my subject, storyline, and interpretation. I combined African terms of the Swahilli tribe, a tribe I am distantly related too on my father's side. I was originally going to use Cherokee dialect, a heritage I am very closely rooted with as my grandmother was a full Cherokee native, but the language did not work out well.
Shot List
I went through a couple of shot plans to emphasize the depth of curls at first. I took a step back and tried to combine the physical with the emotional side of African hair.
Curly hair does not come in one size, in fact there is a range of curls base on hair texture and hair types. What I wanted to bring to this project was that all curly hair is beautiful and all woman of color are what makes their curly hair beautiful as well.
The following was what I decided to go with:
Shot 1: Curls
Shot 2: child
Shot 3: sink wash
Shot 4: teen
Shot 5: Young Adult
